GOAL: 1000 TREES

990 LEFT

We aim to plant 1000 native British trees with communities across the North West. With every tree ambassador, we are one step closer to reaching that goal. Get involved and become a tree ambassador today!

Buy Your Tree

We are building a community forest. We need 1,000 trees to do it.

Not a metaphor. Not a pledge. A real, growing forest on real land in East Lancashire — planted tree by tree, by people who decided that something permanent was worth making.

When you purchase a tree through The Reforestation Project CIC, that tree — a native English oak, silver birch, hazel, or one of the other species we plant — goes into the ground. Not symbolically. Physically. In soil. Where it will grow for centuries.

And you become part of something much larger than a single tree.

The vision: a community forest

This is not a straightforward tree planting campaign. It is the foundation of a long-term, socially-engaged art project — possibly one of the most ambitious things a community organisation in East Lancashire has attempted.

We are building a community forest that will serve as:

A hub for The Reforestation Project

Our permanent base — where our work is rooted, where our sessions can happen on land we know will always be there, and where the community we serve has a place to gather, learn, and return to year after year.

A living classroom

A place where children come to plant, to learn, and to grow up alongside the trees they planted. Where schools bring groups, where families return each year, and where the connection between young people and the natural world is built not in a lesson but in an experience that lasts a lifetime.

A home for artists

A base where artists can practice their crafts using natural materials in a natural environment: wood carvers working with timber from the forest itself, willow sculptors weaving living structures into the landscape, land artists making work that changes with the seasons, and sculptors creating permanent pieces that become part of the forest’s character over time.

A socially-engaged art project at scale

The forest itself is the artwork — shaped by the community that plants it, the artists who work within it, and the natural forces that transform it year by year. The 1,000 trees are not a backdrop to the project. They are the project.

A free public space

Open to all, held in community ownership, and protected by our CIC asset lock — meaning it cannot be sold, developed, or taken away. Whatever grows there grows for everyone.

The 1000 tree goal

1,000 trees is the number we need to establish a genuinely self-sustaining, ecologically diverse native woodland. It is the threshold at which the forest begins to function as a habitat rather than simply a collection of individual trees — where species interact, where the canopy starts to close, where the soil ecology shifts, and where the forest begins to take care of itself.

It is also the number that makes the art project viable. An artist working with the materials of a woodland — timber, willow, coppiced hazel, bark, leaf, water — needs a woodland of substance. 1,000 trees gives the forest an identity, a character, and enough resource to sustain creative practice across many years.

Every tree sold brings the goal one closer. Every name on the Thank You page is part of the forest’s founding story.

What you receive

Unique authentication of contribution

Unique authentication of contribution

Unique authentication of contribution

A unique authentication of contribution acknowledging your role in the community forest, and expressing our thanks for your support. This is to honour you, your organisation, or for you to forward to the intended recipient if you are giving a tree as a gift.

Email updates as the project grows

Unique authentication of contribution

Unique authentication of contribution

We will keep you informed as the forest takes shape — the trees going in, the artists arriving, the children visiting, the seasons passing. These are not marketing emails. They are dispatches from a project you helped to fund, sent because you are part of its story and you deserve to see it unfold. You can opt out at any time.

Your name on our Thank You page

Unique authentication of contribution

Your name on our Thank You page

A permanent, public record on our website of everyone who chose to support this work. You can list your own name, a loved one’s name, a business name, or remain anonymous — just let us know at checkout. The page stays up for as long as the forest stands. Once we have reached our goal and acquired land, we will have a sign made for the site to proudly display all those who supported us.

For yourself, or as a gift

A tree in a community forest is not a conventional gift. That is exactly the point.

It is the kind of gift that prompts a conversation. That comes back up years later when someone says: do you remember when you gave me that? The forest will still be there. The name will still be displayed at the site. It works for a birthday, an anniversary, a retirement, a birth, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Earth Day, Christmas, or any occasion where the usual options feel like not quite enough. You may even choose to dedicate this tree to a loved one who has passed away. If you are giving it as a gift or as a memorial, indicate this at checkout and we will ensure the recipient’s name appears on the Thank You page.

Why this matters here, now, in Hyndburn

Hyndburn is one of the most deprived boroughs in England, with significantly less accessible green space per person than the national average. The communities we serve — children growing up in dense urban streets, families without access to countryside, schools without outdoor learning — have the least access to exactly what trees provide: clean air, calm, biodiversity, and the experience of something older and larger than themselves.

A community forest changes that permanently. Not for one visit. Not for one school trip. For ever.

And the art programme — the artists in residence, the public sculpture trails, the workshops using materials from the forest itself — makes the forest into something more than a green space. It makes it a cultural place. Somewhere people come because something is happening there, because something was made there, because it belongs to them.

Your tree is 1 of 1000. Together they are extraordinary.
